Linux Tips (Ubuntu 9.10)

Reluctantly I still use Windows for the bulk of my work.
I love to tinker and I've totally destroyed more than one install of Linux.
I have learned several times now to back up any files I want to keep onto my Windows part of the hard drive.
I am very impressed with Ubuntu 9.10, many things work right out of the box.

These are some goodies I have struggled with and found solutions for:

How to install Freemind

9.0 The version of Freemind that is in the repositories is an old one.
Even though version 0.9 is not officially released yet, it is very very stable.
Go to https://launchpad.net/~igorgomes/+archive/ppa/+files/freemind_0.9.0RC4-0ubuntu1_all.deb

How to install fonts from Windows into Linux

1. Open your File Browser
2. View>click on 'Show hidden files'
3. Look for a folder called '.fonts'
4. If it's not there you will have to make one.
5. File>Create Folder>(type in) .fonts
6. Go to /home (whatever your log in name is)/.fonts
7. Copy the font files to /home/username/.fonts
8. Open another File Browser and go to Local Disk>Windows>Fonts
9. Pick the fonts you want and copy them into your new .fonts directory on Linux.
10. I have only copied the .ttf fonts, I don't know about the others.
11. That's it. Those fonts are now available to you in Linux.

How to install HP LaserJet 4050

1. (Ubuntu 9.10) Go to System>Administration>Synaptics Packager Manager
2. Find and install the Gutenprint packages.
You will need some 'cups' packages but I do not know which ones.

I don't remember if they loaded automatically with the Gutenprint install.
3. System>Administration>Printing>New>Printer
4. Find the Make and Model
5. Pick HP Laserjet 4050 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.4
6. Install it and you are good to go

I hope that helps someone out there.
Thanks.
