Purpose
Rites of passage allow boys to conscientiously choose their emerging adult identity.
They are going to take their place in community weather they are ready or not.
They will be more ready after this weekend.
In BTM we work with boys between 14 to 17.
Our processes are presented in a good way and in confidence.
The following are some common themes to many passages including the Boys to Men’s Adventure Passage Weekend;
Transition in a wild or primitive setting
A remote camp setting provides a boy with the time to learn the responsibilities and mysteries of being an adult.
It is an opportunity to reflect on his becoming a man.
It is exciting, scary, challenging, and confusing all at once.
Test of endurance, bravery, or competence
Primarily with young men, initiations incorporate physical or emotional tests to help ensure that the initiate is ready for the challenges and responsibilities of adulthood.
Teaching and learning
In most passages a young man is taught by elders, teachers, and peers.
In our culture this is mostly done in an unconsidered way, in BTM we do it with intention and focus.
While we share things that every adult should know, some teachings are personal and very important.
Physical Token of Changes
After the boys have faced their challenges they are honored for beginning their own “heroes journey” into manhood.
There is a celebration ceremony where they are presented with their hero’s talisman.
The young men are also honored with a new status, they are now called “journeymen", on the journey to manhood.
Journeymen are offered leadership opportunities and are eligible to staff as leaders on other young men’s adventure weekends.
